Parna Sarkar-Basu continues her conversation with NuoDB Executive Chairman Barry Morris and learns about his passion, achievements and secret to success.
What gets you up in the morning?
We are living in the most exciting time in history. It’s a time of change. We see massive changes happening in our society and in our daily lives – and that change is mostly driven by constant innovation and new technology. I wake up every morning excited to be able to impact the technology ecosystem that’s transforming companies and society in general today. That’s why I am doing what I do and am proud to be part of the wider community that is leading this technology transformation and our technology – which is fundamentally very different and will have long reaching impact on business and humanity.
What do you consider your greatest achievements?
Everything I have done to date falls into a category of influencing people -- building teams, building organizations and bringing large group of people together to drive productivity. I am proud of all my entrepreneurial and leadership achievements because it’s been about mobilizing people to do great things.
What do you do when you are not working?
You don’t build a company by working part time. It’s hard work. So when I am not working, I am sleeping. But in reality, I have lots of interests – I play the guitar and piano and love taking rides on my motorcycle. I am also a fanatic when it comes to rugby and have been known to fly around the world for a single game.
As an entrepreneur, what advice will you give to a budding entrepreneur?
My top three tips are – relentless energy, relentless energy and relentless energy. Yes, you need a lot of drive to turn an idea into a business. It’s also about relationships and who you know. To be a successful technology entrepreneur, you need to develop relationships with the right people, and also contribute to their ideas and visions.
Will your international background help as NuoDB expands its business operations?
Absolutely. I’ve lived in various countries including South Africa, U.K., Ireland and now the U.S. and am very familiar with the global business eco-systems. At NuoDB, I have also hired professionals from various parts of the world – making it a very diverse company, a rarity for start-ups. My background, our cultural diversity and business knowledge gives us the ease and speed to expand globally – which we’ve already done, including opening offices in the U.K. and Ireland.
Do you have a favorite phrase?
