Now Available: NuoDB 3.0!
Today, I’m excited to announce the availability of NuoDB 3.0. This major release represents the culmination of years of hard work maturing our elastic SQL database into a fully capable and proven enterprise production database that supports migration-friendly ANSI SQL, full ACID compliance, and deployment across hybrid environments.
One of the first to innovate on database technology by offering an elastic SQL database to market in 2013, NuoDB is commonly used today as a critical component in highly transactional, business-critical applications. Appearing to the application just as a standard SQL, fully ACID-compliant database, NuoDB’s underlying architecture offered a new design specifically built for distributed, hybrid cloud, environments.
Our NuoDB 3.0 announcement features:
- A formalized hybrid cloud strategy with significant expansion of partnerships, certifications, integrations, and validations with major cloud vendors.
- New validations and integrations for cloud and distributed application environments
- Core database performance improvements
- Streamlined, automated operations
Below I’ll summarize the highlights of what’s included with NuoDB 3.0. Over the next few weeks, look forward to additional blogs that will provide deeper looks into specific aspects of NuoDB 3.0.

Hybrid Cloud Partnerships
We’ve significantly expanded our hybrid cloud strategy with the goal of formally supporting NuoDB’s reputation as the enterprise-class, elastic SQL database for hybrid cloud environments. In 2013, we became a Standard Technology Partner in the Amazon Partner Network, allowing customers to deploy across AWS and on-premises environments. Now we are officially adding new technology certifications, integrations, and validations to our hybrid cloud strategy with several of the world’s top cloud and hybrid cloud vendors, including Red Hat, Microsoft, Google, and Docker.
By offering NuoDB certifications with these cloud vendors, we are providing our customers the choice to gain access to their database however best suits their business without fear of cloud lock-in, without the need to set up complicated and expensive data management pipelines, without the need to re-write their application, and all while preserving familiar SQL data access and ACID transactions.
Red Hat Certified Technology Partner and Red Hat Business Partner
Our partnership with Red Hat is particularly special because Red Hat and NuoDB are both focused on helping customers modernize and move the applications to cloud and hybrid cloud environments while optimizing familiar benefits and gaining modern benefits. Red Hat is a visionary and innovative organization offering modernization, containerization, and hybrid cloud solutions for many parts of the application stack but not the database. NuoDB fills that gap with a modern database built for containers and hybrid clouds that preserves traditional benefits of transactional consistency, durability, SQL and the relational model.
As a Red Hat Technology and Business Partner, we’ve certified and integrated our database with Red Hat Openshift Container Platform, Red Hat Containers, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform. Integrate with distributed, diverse application environments, including providing continuous availability across three AWS Availability Zones.
NuoDB 2.6 featured validation of active-active deployments across two AWS Availability Zones. We continue to expand our support for continuous availability across multiple environments with NuoDB 3.0 by validating deployments up to 10 transaction engines and two storage managers across three availability zones.
Just as with our last release, if you want to deploy NuoDB across environments outside AWS, you can do that too and take advantage of the same active-active continuity benefits against process, server, and data center failures.
Support as an XA Resource Manager in XA Application Environments
While NuoDB, itself, is not designed to employ XA transactions within the database to coordinate database transaction, we now support the use of NuoDB in larger ecosystems that use the XA standard. In complex, diverse application environments, it’s common for applications to coordinate transactions across multiple resources (i.e., message brokers, databases, application servers) via XA transaction standards. NuoDB can now be integrated into these environments as an XA Resource Manager, allowing NuoDB to be part of distributed transaction coordination.

Elastic SQL Database Core Performance
Performance standards have changed as organizations have moved to take advantage of hybrid cloud, elastic environments. Unlike traditional database, NuoDB is designed as a high-performance elastic SQL database for these types of workloads. NuoDB 3.0 features an improved modular query optimizer, resulting in higher query performance for the customer. In customer production workload benchmark testing, we’ve significantly improved overall read/write performance against NuoDB 2.6 and continue to enrich and expand beyond our ANSI compliant SQL compatibility.
Workload Performance Optimization Across Multiple Environments
As applications in different environments access NuoDB, the transaction workload may shift from one environment to the other over time. For example, data workloads on-premises may move into the cloud. Or may move from one cloud to another cloud in a different location. NuoDB 3.0 provides workload management of transactions to optimize high performance where the bulk of the workload is occurring.
Reduce operational overhead with streamlined, automated database statistics and operations.
Automated Table Statistics
Database query optimizers use table index statistics to help determine the most efficient way to perform a query. As new data is added, removed, and modified within a database, table index statistics eventually become outdated, resulting in less-than-optimal, slower, and inefficient queries. Typically, updating table index statistics is a manual process.
NuoDB 3.0 features table index statistics which are automatically refreshed and updated to reflect changes in the database. When an application loads new data or changes existing data, NuoDB’s table index statistics will be automatically kept up-to-date, allowing the query optimizer to produce the best query results.
Online Storage Group Backup
Storage groups were introduced in our last release - NuoDB 2.6. With NuoDB 3.0, you can now easily perform online backup of the database when storage groups are used.
New Logging Categories
We’ve added two new logging categories to NuoDB, which allows users to capture real-time SQL EXPLAIN and performance metrics. These two categories, sql-statement-explain-plans and sql-statement-metrics help organizations better understand query execution plans and NuoDB performance, allowing them to more closely optimize their NuoDB deployments.
