Now Available: NuoDB 2.6!
I’d like to introduce myself - my name is Ariff Kassam. I’m the new VP of Products at NuoDB. I joined NuoDB mid last year. Previous to NuoDB, I was the VP of Product Management for Teradata’s Unified Data Architecture Platform and before that I was the co-founder and CTO of xkoto, a database virtualization solution. I hope to be a regular contributor to this TechBlog.
Today, we announced NuoDB 2.6!
I’m excited to announce the availability of NuoDB 2.6. It is a great release that fulfills, expands on, and validates our elastic SQL scale out capabilities including across multiple data centers, adds new features to support high performance, and continues to ease migration scenarios.
Specifically in 2.6 you can expect to see:
- Validated Active-Active deployment across AWS Availability Zones
- Table Partitioning
- Storage Groups
- Improved SQL compatibility
- Additional performance and operational improvements
We’ll be covering each of the new NuoDB 2.6 highlights in greater detail over the next few weeks, but here’s a summary of what’s new in NuoDB 2.6.
Achieve continuous availability for your Amazon Web Services (AWS) applications with active-active deployment across Availability Zones
Continuous availability is a critical requirement for modern day, always-on customer expectations. You can use it to eliminate unplanned and planned downtime, minimize data loss in case of failures, and maximizing utilization of your data center infrastructure.
We’ll explore traditional approaches to active-active database architectures in subsequent blogs, but in general most other active-active add-ons introduce significant costs and complexity. With NuoDB, active-active capabilities are a natural extension of our unique architecture.
NuoDB 2.6 expands formal support for active-active deployment across multiple AWS availability zones. We’ve validated deployments up to 10 transaction engines and two storage managers per availability zone. Of course, if you want to deploy NuoDB across environments outside AWS, you can do that too and take advantage of the same active-active continuity benefits against process, server, and data center failures.
Improve data management and scale-out storage performance with table partitioning and storage groups.
We’re taking Table Partitions and Storage Groups out of technical preview and offering it for full production use. Applications can now use standard SQL table partitioning to segregate data into logical groupings. Partitioned data can then be combined into storage groups which are in turn mapped to one or more storage managers in the database . Ultimately, this allows partitioned data to be stored on separate servers for redundant backups, to place data closer to the user or application that needs access to it, and to have finer control over how data subsets are handled.
Table partitions can be used to improve data management and query performance. Storage groups enables scale out and improved input/output performance at the storage layer. Both of these features together allows the application to perform actions such as data age out or archiving more efficiently, assign specific workloads to slower or higher performance disks, take advantage of parallel computing power, and process higher throughput volumes of reads and writes.
Expanded SQL compatibility to further simplify migration efforts when moving your applications to the cloud
At NuoDB, our goal is to provide your application - whether new or existing - with a database that will elastically scale to meet your application requirements. For existing applications, this means making it easy to move from your traditional database to NuoDB and gain the benefits of elastic SQL. NuoDB 2.6 expands on our SQL compatibility with additions such as support for DDL Triggers, deferred name resolution, logic control flow statements, and more.
