What Will Be 2015’s Biggest Winner?

This is the season for making predictions for the coming year. I curate a blog called The Business of Data and this week’s entry contains a number of interesting predictions from some technical gurus in the DBMS business and even one of my own. You can read those here

But now I’m here to tell you what’s absolutely going to be really big in 2015. The real hot prediction. The thing you should bet on…

Cat cafés.

A cat café is an eating/drinking establishment – a coffee shop basically – where cats waiting for adoption hang out. Patrons can get a cattucino, a bite to eat, and pet cats at their leisure.

Cat cafés have been around in Japan and Asia-Pacific for about ten years. The first café in the U.S. opened in April in New York just for a day. It went viral immediately and had a line of people that ran for blocks waiting to get in. Check it out on YouTube.

Since then cat cafés started springing up or are being planned to open soon all over North America: DenverMontreal, Oakland and right here at home, Bostonians are begging for one.

As in the famous scene played out in the film The Graduate:

Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.
Benjamin: Yes, sir.
Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
Benjamin: Yes, I am.
Mr. McGuire: Plastics.

I just want to say two words. Just two words:

Cat cafés.
