NuoDB Expands Open Source Driver Initiative

Company Releases New Python Driver And Fully Documents Wire Protocol

Cambridge, MA – June 26, 2013 – NuoDB, Inc., the industry leader in NewSQL, today announced they have released another Open Source driver on Github. The new Python driver is accompanied by full documentation of the NuoDB wire protocol. This new documentation enables developers to easily build and release their own drivers for the NuoDB solution in other programming languages.

The company had originally announced the Open Source Initiative in early 2012. This effort gave developers the ability to freely contribute to NuoDB’s database driver developments on Github.

Earlier this year NuoDB had also open sourced its .NET driver and today’s announcementincludes several enhancements to that driver:

  • 2 assemblies: .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.0
  • Entity Framework 5 support in the .NET 4.0 driver
  • Reading/writing GUID columns to the database
  • Connection pooling.

“I beta tested the NuoDB Python driver with SQL Alchemy, got excellent results, and will be porting my application to NuoDB soon,” stated Peter Bunyan, a developer at Blueshed, England.

“Downloads of the NuoDB solution have almost tripled since we announced general availability in January 2013. As demand has accelerated, more and more developers are asking for specific drivers like Erlang or niche drivers used with proprietary enterprise applications,” stated Barry Morris, NuoDB Co-Founder and CEO. “Documenting the wire protocol for widespread development will ensure NuoDB’s customers are able to develop with the tools they favor. By open sourcing on the client side, we will help accelerate customers’ application development cycles.”

NuoDB Demonstrates 72,000 Hyper Pluggable Databases Running on a Single HP Moonshot System
    /resources/press-releases/nuodb-demonstrates-72000-hyper-pluggable-databases-running-single-hp

NuoDB’s Patent-Pending Database Hibernation Bursting Capabilities Reduce Database Server Costs by 90%

Cambridge, MA–(Marketwired – Apr 17, 2013) – NuoDB, Inc., the pioneer in cloud databases, announced today the availability of a demonstration documenting the breakthrough performance of their NuoDB Starlings release on the high density, energy efficient HP Moonshot system. In addition, the company announced the filing of patents for two related features.

The combination of NuoDB Starlings and Moonshot will increase database density, allowing customers to deploy tens of thousands of databases on a single HP Moonshot Server. This deployment will reduce a customer’s total cost of hardware, maintenance and power consumption by 90%.

Working with the HP Discovery Lab, as an HP Innovation Partner, NuoDB was able to run 72,000 instances of the NuoDB Cloud database on a fully loaded Moonshot system with 45 cartridges.

Patent Application Submitted For Innovative Hibernation and Database Bursting Capabilities
A NuoDB database is made up of an agile collection of processes making it very inexpensive to start or stop a database. A NuoDB implementation is also able to monitor server capacity and understand what’s going on inside each database. As a result, if a particular database has been idle long enough that something else could use the associated resources more effectively; NuoDB can shut down the inactive databases — putting it into hibernation mode — to make way for other operating databases.

When an SQL client needs to access the database that’s been shut off, the NuoDB product simply re-starts it. This mechanism has been submitted for a United States Patent for hibernating and waking a database. This on-demand resource management means that while there are some number of databases actively running, NuoDB can support a much larger number of total instances. This innovative new ability is particularly useful for applications that exhibit a long-tail access pattern. (For more information on long-tail access patterns, click on this link:http://www.thelongtail.com/about.html)

Using this new hibernation capability, NuoDB was able to run 7,200 simultaneous active databases and 72,000 total databases on a single 4.3u Moonshot System.

The company has also filed a patent for a new database bursting feature. This capability is used when a single database becomes popular and begins to take up too many resources on a single server. If a customer provisions another server in response, separate from the Moonshot System, then the NuoDB CDMS will temporarily “burst” a high-activity database to that new host until activity dies down. The bursting function occurs automatically, quickly, and provides users with on-demand capacity when a database is suddenly “hot” with a flood of transactions.

    Demonstration Available
A brief demonstration of NuoDB running on Moonshot is available here. Interested parties can also request more information by emailing info@nuodb.com.

The new hibernation and bursting features will be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2013.

“We’ve shown how NuoDB can scale a single database to over 1 million transactions per second on 32 machines. For this new generation of systems, we took a different approach. Rather than make a single database scale to large volume, we wanted to take advantage of Moonshot-type architecture and see how many individual, smaller databases we could support simultaneously. We took a fully-configured HP Project Moonshot System and turned it into a high-density, low-power, easy to manage hosting appliance,” stated Barry Morris, CEO and Co-Founder of NuoDB.

“Continuing our pioneering innovations in cloud databases, we are working to offer this record-breaking degree of database density and unique hibernation and bursting abilities on future high density systems from other vendors as well,” continued Morris.

The NuoDB Starlings release was the solution tested.  It features elastic scalability with high performance, SQL compliance and guaranteed ACID transactions. The release, first made generally available on January 15, 2013, eliminates the need for the complex database workarounds that are typically associated with bringing applications to the cloud such as clustering, performance tuning and sharding.

“NuoDB is setting a high bar for cloud databases with their combination of high performance and elastic scalability.” stated Barry Morris, CEO and Co-Founder of NuoDB, Inc.

“The database showed no signs of reaching it’s scaling capacity across these 32 machines and we literally ran out of hardware to keep testing the system for this benchmark. “ continued Morris.  “These performance characteristics combined with the distributed nature of our CDMS, makes NuoDB the most scalable SQL Database in the Cloud.”

    The NuoDB CDMS Challenge:

“Embrace the Cloud!” NuoDB CEO and Co-Founder, Barry Morris, explains how a new era of CDMS technology is imminent.

“A CDMS must offer the asynchronous, peer-to-peer attributes that are inherent to the cloud itself along with the kind of 1.7 million transactions per second performance and elastic scalability we demonstrated last week,” stated Barry Morris, CEO and Co-Founder of NuoDB, Inc.

“Matt and Gary spoke of the differences between a database “on” the cloud versus a database “of” the cloud,” continued Morris. “We hope the industry will respond to the challenge to offer the market elastically-scalable, high performance data management systems “of” the cloud.”

“We expect to see a growing debate this year about the difference between relational databases on the cloud and cloud databases designed to take advantage of and enable elastic, distributed architecture,” said Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics, 451 Research. “The launch of NuoDB’s Cloud Data Management System and 12 rules for a 21st century cloud database provide a great starting point for that debate.” To watch the full length archived video coverage of the event, click here.

    Customer Quotes

“NuoDB is launching a revolution in the database world by leveraging commodity storage. For the first time, an application’s storage requirements can be satisfied using a pool of shared resources, operating in a fully-elastic way, as the nature of cloud computing requires,” stated Richard Cooley, Managing Partner, NorthPoint.

Company Announces Pricing Including Freemium Model To Support Global Application Developer Community

Cambridge, MA – November 14, 2012 – NuoDB, Inc., a startup offering the industry’s only elastically-scalable Emergent Database for the cloud, today announced that their Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is now available for immediate download by the general public. RC1 represents the end of the company’s one-year, private beta trial.

Simultaneously, the company announced pricing and licensing for their commercial software, which will be made generally available (GA) in 30 to 60 days, as well as announcing the kick off of a new partner program, NuoConnect.

New Product Editions Based on Freemium Model

Based on a patented emergent architecture, NuoDB is SQL-compliant, guarantees ACID transactions and scales elastically on heterogeneous and decentralized cloud-based resources or on premises. It offers high performance with highly efficient resource utilization. NuoDB uses an asynchronous, peer-to-peer model that makes previously impossible database tasks possible and simple. Effective GA date, NuoDB will be offering two editions of their solution:

The NuoDB Community Edition – is a free-forever version of NuoDB intended for use in smaller-scale applications. It is a full-featured, high-performance SQL database, which offers powerful in-memory caching, multi-tenancy and poses no restrictions on database size. The Community Edition has been benchmarked at between 2 and 20 times the performance of popular Open Source SQL databases on similar hardware.

The NuoDB Pro Edition – is designed to scale elastically to support applications with very high requirements for transactions per second and currency as well as in databases in which uptime is business-critical.

The Pro Edition features all the power the NuoDB’s architecture can offer. As with the Community Edition, it will run in public clouds including Amazon EC2, private clouds, on-premise data centers or even on a laptop.

The NuoDB Pro Edition will be offered in 4-process node packs priced at $10,000/pack annually including technical support and upgrades. In addition to all Community Edition capabilities, it provides elastic scale out/in, built-in redundancy, and hot upgrade capabilities and also offers optional support for HDFS, the Hadoop Distributed File System, and Amazon S3.

The Community Edition will be offered as a 2-process node version and will be free forever.

    Availability

Release candidates for the NuoDB Pro and Community Editions are available immediately. In addition, the Pro Edition, including 8-process nodes, will be available as a free 30-day evaluation at the time of GA.

    Release Candidate Offers New Features/Benefits

This latest Release Candidate includes new features not found in previous beta versions of the NuoDB software. Improvements in RC1 include:

    • Support for node.JS gives developers access to a fast, data-intensive and elastically scalable database;
    • A rolling upgrades model for upgrading hardware, operating systems or the NuoDB software without taking a NuoDB database offline;
    • Tunable Commit Protocol – both local and remote – to specify when/where transactions are durable;
    • An enhanced NuoConsole, the web-based, intuitive management tool that reduces database administration to near zero.

NuoConnect Program Kicks Off With RC1

As part of the launch of Release Candidate 1, NuoDB also announced, in a separate release, the NuoConnect program for partner companies. The NuoConnect announcement also included the signing of several charter partners. For more information see: NuoDB Expands Market Penetration With NuoConnect Partner Program

    Analyst Reaction to RC1

“NuoDB is proof that innovation is continuing apace in the database market. Driven by seasoned database experts with an impressive track record, the company is now releasing a high-performance SQL-based large-scale-out transactional database that runs happily on commodity hardware. It will likely attract a good deal of attention,” stated Robin Bloor, Ph.D, Chief Analyst Cofounder, The Bloor Group and Founder, Bloor Research.

    Customer Feedback

“More than 2,000 beta customers provided feedback during NuoDB’s one-year beta trial. They indicated that traditional SQL solutions don’t scale; are too costly and do not adequately meet the requirements for a 21st century database. One-third tested NuoDB as an alternative to their existing SQL databases,” stated Adam Abrevaya, NuoDB Vice President of Engineering.

“NuoDB offers the scalability my application requires and does so in a more affordable, more easily implemented manner than any other competitive solutions I have investigated,” commented Idan Schechter, an Israeli developer and NuoDB beta customer.

“Customers should be able to test business-critical software with zero risk before committing those solutions to production,” stated Barry Morris, Co-founder and CEO of NuoDB. “Our pricing and licensing model, like the NuoDB product itself, is based on the explicit needs of developers and architects building new applications or migrating existing ones. Its usage-based approach scales easily as their applications grow and evolve.”

NuoDB Beta Participants Highlight Latest Cloud Database Trends
    /resources/press-releases/nuodb-beta-participants-highlight-latest-cloud-database-trends-0

Unexpected Number of Users Seeking to Migrate From Traditional Relational Databases

Cambridge, MA- October 02, 2012- NuoDB, Inc., the leader in elastically scalable, emergent database software for the cloud, today announced results of their beta test. Beta participants included web application developers, database administrators and application architects at companies ranging from the Global 1000 to small IT consultancies.

From the start of the beta program through September, 2012 nearly 2,000 participants have downloaded the NuoDB solution. Documenting an explosion of interest, unique beta downloaders doubled in September 2012 alone.

The company also announced its final beta, Beta 9, in a companion press release entitled: NuoDB Announces Final Beta Release of Emergent Database: Beta 9 Adds Major New Functionality Including Support for Zend Framework and Hadoop.

The official beta program is slated for completion in late October. A generally available release of the solution will be delivered later in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Key Beta Results Highlight Database Crisis
“One key discovery within our beta results was the significant number of customers contemplating a migration of their SQL databases to a more cloud-ready platform,” stated Barry Morris, CEO and Co-founder of NuoDB.

“A full 40% of beta downloads were used for testing the NuoDB solution with an existing application being migrated to the cloud,” added Morris. “We had expected only a small percentage of customers would migrate so this was a positive surprise that expanded our target market. One result we had fully anticipated, and which was validated during the beta test, was that the majority of beta customers would be creating a new web-scale application for either SaaS or mobile environments.”

“Most importantly, all beta customers spoke consistently of a compelling need for an innovative, all new relational database that is easier to scale in the cloud, still supports SQL, and requires near zero administration,” concluded Morris.

NuoDB beta customers are currently using MySQL, Oracle and SQL Server, in that order of frequency. The types of applications beta customers are testing include:

    •     OLTP: 54%
    •     Analytics: 38%
    •     Data logging: 8%.

    Noteworthy NuoDB Beta Customer Quotes

U.S. Patent Issued for NuoDB Cloud Database Technology
    /resources/press-releases/us-patent-issued-nuodb-cloud-database-technology-0

NuoDB application flies thru USPTO with unique technology claim of no prior art

Cambridge, MA- August 08, 2012- NuoDB, Inc., a startup company offering the industry’s first and only elastically scalable database, today announced their software has been patented by the United States Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO) in less than half the time allotted for approval of the average patent. The patent was filed on March 18, 2011 and approved July 17, 2012, a span of just 15 months.

Patent number 8224860 was issued for a multi-user, elastic, on-demand, distributed relational database management system. The NuoDB database is fragmented into distributed objects called atoms. Any change to a copy of an atom at one location is replicated to all other locations containing a copy of that atom. Transactional managers operate to satisfy the properties of atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability. This includes the so-called “ACID guarantee,” which is the property that is necessary for managing valuable data.

According to a January 2012 article in Fast Company, a leading business publication with an editorial focus on innovation in technology, the average patent approval process is 34 months.

    The background
“Database technology has not kept up with database demand,” stated Jim Starkey, Founder and CTO of NuoDB. “A single computer, no matter how large, cannot service a modern application. The technologies available to distribute database processing among several computers just pushed the problems back to application developers. Those technologies scaled, but lacked the transactional guarantees that made traditional databases so appealing.

When I started what became NuoDB, the time for variations on existing themes was past. If databases were to scale, a whole new approach was required, one unsaddled by ancient assumptions.

The NuoDB patent represents a clean sheet re-invention of the relational database. The interface is standard, but the underpinnings are so new that there weren’t even terms for its concepts. The patent sailed through the patent office with a finding of “no prior art.”

Innovation is not an end in itself, but a means to goal. The goal is a database system that scales dynamically almost without limit by adding more machines; a database system that can provide arbitrary redundancy and availability; a database that designed for up-time measured in years or decades.”

“We are delighted that Jim Starkey received approval of his patent application so efficiently,” stated Barry Morris, NuoDB CEO and Founder. “It is a testament to the uniqueness of Jim’s vision that the Patent Office found no other software comparable to ours and thus were able to issue approval so swiftly. We are certain when the product becomes generally available later in 2012, that developers will be impressed by the simplicity, elasticity and reliability of our web-scale offering. It is unique in its ability to solve cloud database problems.”

    NuoDB Software Availability
The NuoDB software is currently available on Windows, MacOS, and Linux platforms in beta release. It can be downloaded for free at http://www.nuodb.com/download.php.

NuoDB Closes $10 Million Series B to Fund Disruptive Cloud Database Innovation
    /resources/press-releases/nuodb-closes-10-million-series-b-fund-disruptive-cloud-database-innovatio-0

Gary Morgenthaler Leads Round as New Investor Joining Former Database Executives Mitchell Kertzman and Nilanjana Bhowmik As Backers

Cambridge, MA- July 09, 2012- NuoDB, the leader in elastically scalable database software for the cloud, today announced a Series B round of funding of $10 million. The round was led by Morgenthaler Ventures and included participation by NuoDB’s previous investors, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Longworth Venture Partners. The latest round brings the company’s total funding to $12 million and will fund development of its disruptive cloud database software as well as sales and marketing.

Morgenthaler Ventures partner Gary Morgenthaler joins the NuoDB board of directors, which also includes Mitchell Kertzman of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and former CEO of Sybase, and Nilanjana Bhowmik of Longworth Venture Partners and former senior executive at Object Design. Morgenthaler was co-founder and CEO of Ingres Corporation, a leading relational database software company and co-founded Illustra, the Postgres company. His investments have included Siri, Nuance Communications and Nominum.

“In today’s web-scale world, databases must be able to scale horizontally and operate in a 24x7 environment,” said Gary Morgenthaler. “The traditional client/server database paradigm is land-locked in a non-web and non-scalable view of the world and that needs to change. The notion of being able to disrupt the $25 billion SQL database market is an investment opportunity we don’t often see and is the primary reason we chose NuoDB from among the many new entrants. Between NuoDB’s approach and the team that really understands the requirements for elastically scalable databases, we’re absolutely convinced that it is the best investment opportunity in this market.”

Unlike every other database, NuoDB is built for the cloud from the ground up on an emergent architecture - a shared nothing, asynchronous, peer-to-peer approach that is ideal for the cloud, while also delivering the power, reliability and functionality of a traditional database. It is specifically architected to scale effortlessly on the cloud without compromising any of the established benefits of SQL and ACID-based relational databases. The NuoDB database is SQL compliant, highly resilient, requires minimal administration, guarantees the integrity of transactions and delivers high performance at web-scale with highly efficient and flexible resource utilization.

“Unlike other database startups, our ambition is not to build something that is 10 percent better than what already exists; it is to change the way to think about databases,” said Barry Morris, NuoDB co-founder and CEO. “The fact that three investors, each with their own history of disruptive successes in the relational and object-oriented database markets, are betting on us validates NuoDB as a fundamental breakthrough in database technology. We appreciate this support.”

NuoDB releases Beta 2 – Now Supports Hybrid Clouds and Cloudbursting
    /resources/press-releases/nuodb-releases-beta-2-%E2%80%93-now-supports-hybrid-clouds-and-cloudbursting

NuoDB, the thought leader in cloud database technology, announces Beta 2 of the revolutionary NuoDB database system, with support for running databases on-premises, on public clouds, or load-balanced between them.

Cambridge, MA – August 23, 2011 – NuoDB, Inc., the thought leader in cloud database technology, announced today that the Beta 2 release of the NuoDB product is available to qualified Beta customers. NuoDB can run on local computers or on cloud-based systems such as the Rackspace cloud, and with Beta 2, the system can now be load balanced or cloudbursted dynamically between local computers and the public cloud.  NuoDB is a NewSQL database system, a new category of databases designed to deliver horizontally scalable ACID transactions within the industry-standard SQL database model.

“Rackspace supports multiple database offerings, and now we are excited to see NuoDB deliver an elastically scalable SQL database that runs on the Rackspace cloud,” said John Engates, CTO at Rackspace.  “The fact that a running database can run simultaneously in a customers own datacenter and on the Rackspace cloud, with load-balancing between them, is an important development for customers and the industry.”

The NuoDB product is the elastically scalable SQL database that supports ACID transactions. Beta 2 includes the following new capabilities:

    • Hybrid cloud deployment model, including real-time cloudbursting
    • Fully redundant disk storage
    • Public cloud enhancements
    • Enhanced Query Interface
    • Support for SQuirreL SQL, the premier open source SQL client
    • Support for LibreOffice, the premier open source office suite
    • Support for Debian-style Linux distributions
    • Extended JDBC and SQL support
    • Airline ticketing application to demonstrate elastic scalability under different loads
    • Improved scalability and performance

“Cloudbursting a running transactional database is an extraordinary breakthrough in database technology”, said Barry Morris, Founder and CEO of NuoDB, Inc. “It’s natural with an elastic database system but impossible with a traditional design. We’re very excited to demonstrate this in the NuoDB Beta 2 release.”

“The recent stock market crash again caused Wall St transaction volumes to exceed the limits of the machines that run trading-related databases,” continued Morris. “A database system that scales-out elastically does not have that problem, especially if you can dynamically add machines from external cloud datacenters. Cloud computing requires elasticity, and now for the first time it is available for the transactional database layer.”

NuoDB Beta 2 is immediately available to a limited number of qualified users.

NuoDB is the new NimbusDB - Database thought-leader changes its name
    /resources/press-releases/nuodb-new-nimbusdb-database-thought-leader-changes-its-name-0

NimbusDB announces company name change to NuoDB, Inc.

Cambridge, MA – August 1, 2011 – NimbusDB, the thought leader in cloud database technology, announced today that the company has chosen to change its name to NuoDB. NuoDB is a NewSQL database system, a new category of databases designed to deliver horizontally scalable ACID transactions within the industry-standard SQL database model. “Nuo” derives from a Chinese word meaning “graceful”.

“Our NuoDB product is in Beta release and as the company gets ready for delivery to production users it is appropriate to adopt a more distinctive identity that reflects the essence of our culture and product”, said Barry Morris, Founder and CEO of NuoDB, Inc. “Early users see it as a major advantage that they can gracefully add and delete computer nodes to a running NuoDB database, which is really one of the key ideas of the cloud and our technology.”

The NuoDB product is an elastically scalable SQL database that supports ACID transactions.

Cloud computing is delivering enormous benefits to users that need computing services on a convenient utility model. Cloud computing does however create a substantial challenge for traditional database systems. Modern demands on databases are unprecedented and unpredictable both in terms of data volumes and user concurrency. Furthermore, the modern cloud data center is populated with small commodity machines connected by commodity networks, not large monolithic computers. What is needed is a new category of database system that delivers elastic scalability on networks of commodity computers but that does not require an enterprise to change its business models, processes, tools, skill bases, etc.

“The NewSQL wave of database systems is a consequence of the failure of traditional, monolithic SQL systems”, added Barry Morris. “What has worked for the last 30 years will not work for the next 30 years, obviously. NuoDB paves the way by creating a new vision of SQL databases that deliver increased or decreased performance as you assign different numbers of machines to a running database. No-one else can do that.”

On the topic of the new name, Morris noted “We liked NimbusDB as a name. It refers to the cloud, and that is what we do. But if you GOOGLE ‘Nimbus’ you’ll get hits that include breweries, toothbrushes, motorcycles, Harry Potter’s flying broom, and a good number of technology companies. NuoDB, on the other hand, gets at who we are and what we do, and distinguishes the company. We’re here to build a long-term business and I want us to do so with a distinctive position in the market. ‘Nuo’ derives from ‘graceful’ in Chinese and in the end gracefully scaling to meet demand is the heart of the cloud data challenge.”
